‘Sunny’ Book Donation Celebrates Family Literacy Day

The Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association, together with New Brunswick author Deborah Irvine Anderson and illustrator Lindsay Vautour, donated 650 copies of their children’s book The Farm on the Sea to Elementary Literacy Inc. (ELF) to mark Family Literacy Day today.

Elementary Literacy Inc. is a charitable organization that manages the delivery of two volunteer reading achievement programs for struggling New Brunswick readers in grade two. Each ELF reading mentor and child who participate in the program this winter will receive a copy of the book.

“We hope the engaging story of Sunny the rare blue salmon will get children excited about reading and spark their curiosity about salmon farming as well,” says Susan Farquharson, Executive Director of the Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association (ACFFA). “Donating books to the ELF program is the perfect way to celebrate Family Literacy Day, especially since the kids will be able to take their own copy of the book home to share with their families.”

The Farm on the Sea is the story of a rare blue salmon named Sunny who guides children through the stages of salmon farming. It’s aimed at readers from ages six to eight. Christmas sales of The Farm on the Sea raised $4,800 for CBC’s annual Harbour Lights Campaign that supports for food banks across southern New Brunswick.

“We are thrilled to receive this generous donation from ACFFA. What better way to celebrate Family Literacy Day than to read a beautiful, creative and fun storybook that was written and illustrated here in New Brunswick,” says Laura Morrell, Program Manager with ELF. “We’re so excited to distribute these books to our reading mentors and student participants. It’s an important and valuable exercise for children to read books that portray their own culture and landscape. Thank you ACFFA!”

Copies of The Farm on the Sea are available for purchase at Indigo in Saint John and Moncton and can also be purchased by contacting ACFFA at 506-755-3526 or via email: info@atlanticfishfarmers.com.
