The "aha" moment.

The Farm on the Sea is the brainchild of Quispamsis writer and former veteran CBC journalist Deborah Irvine Anderson, who was inspired after spotting a rare blue salmon during a salmon farm tour. Wanting kids to learn about ocean farming the way she once learned in school about farming on land, she teamed up with the Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association and award-winning New Brunswick illustrator and graphic designer Lindsay Brittain to bring Sunny the blue salmon to life. Deborah developed the book with classroom learning in mind – from the salmon life cycle to literacy connections and ocean-career exploration.

“Everyone was dazzled! Rave reviews from students and teachers.”

The book was first published in 2020. When COVID hit, ACFFA partnered with Deborah and Lindsay to expand the project into videos, and an online flipbook. Classroom readings launched in 2023 and have been a hit ever since. Today, The Farm on the Sea is a vibrant educational resource loved by teachers, students, and families across Atlantic Canada.
