The Atlantic coast’s abundant natural ocean environment makes it one of the best locations in the world to farm fish, especially Atlantic salmon, in an environmentally sustainable way. Canadians who live in urban centres depend on rural, coastal communities to provide them with fresh, healthy farmed seafood.
Atlantic salmon is one of the most energy efficient farmed animals; its carbon footprint is far smaller than other protein production methods. Farming the ocean will continue to play a vital role in helping Canada – and the world – fight climate change.
Salmon farming creates over 4000 jobs in Atlantic Canada while directly contributing $400 million to the economy. Our farmers have always been – and will continue to be – pioneers and innovators, and we look forward to talking to Minister Jordan about the many technological opportunities that exist in our sector on the East Coast.
Our sector has a key role to play in a Blue Economy, and we welcome the opportunity to work with Minister Jordan and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive strategy that grows Canada’s ocean economy in a sustainable way while creating jobs and prosperity in coastal communities.
