Keeping our Essential Workers Safe and Salmon Farms Operating During Covid-19

Susan Farquharson
Executive Director, Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association
As we all find our way through the COVID-19 pandemic, our sector’s primary focus is the health and safety of our employees and our communities. We know it is vital to our food supply chain that our farms continue to operate and get fresh salmon to consumers.

Companies are doing their very best to stay on top of the evolving COVID situation and are taking action to take care of their staff, families and communities while continuing to operate.

Because fisheries and aquaculture are recognized as an essential service, every Atlantic Canadian province (and Maine) has granted exemptions that allows companies in these sectors to continue to operate provided all reasonable steps are being taken by each individual company and their employees to prevent the spread of the virus. These exemptions enable interprovincial and Canada/US travel of employees and equipment (vessels, aircraft, rail, transport and service trucks, etc.) to maintain and service operations.

We thank the thousands of people working in the salmon farming industry across Atlantic Canada for going to work during a pandemic. That isn’t easy to do when so many others are being told to stay at home.

Your work is essential to help secure our food supply at this time. We are here for you and appreciate you!
